It is the water management company owned by the citizen services group FCC and by the Australian ethical fund IFM Investors. The company is the largest water company in Spain, the fourth in Europe in terms of population served and ranks amongst the top ten worldwide, according to the newest Global Water Intelligence report (August 2019).

 Aqualia is a benchmark in the sector and stands at the vanguard as a specialized, transparent and innovative entity. It´s main activity comprises 3 major areas among which it creates synergies in knowledge, methodology, research and development, working with local partners and administrations: integral management of public water services, design and construction of all types of water infrastructures, global solutions for the use of water in industry.

The company has its own R&D area, working for innovation and development of new technologies. Currently, its R&D area has developed 5 new products and process as well as new patented technologies. Aqualia has broad knowledge specialized in environmental services (such as WWT, sludge management and biogas reuse). Its experience on coordinating EU projects supports its capacity to lead LIFE ULISES. Its intervention would be essential in order to select the project location, get the required permits for the construction and operation of the project prototypes, replicate and transfer the technologies for further implementation and spread disseminate and communicate the project concept, objectives and results.


CETIM is a private non-profit Technology Centre located in A Coruña (Spain), which mission is to promote research, technological development and innovation in different economic sectors and economic activities. The activity of the Centre is focused on industrial support through applied collaborative Research and Development focused in the areas of Eco Bio Technologies, Advanced Materials and Digital Industry

The main area involved in LIFE ULISES, Eco Bio Technologies is specialized in Water and WasteWater technologies, Circular Economy and Biorefinery. Moreover, CETIM has important expertise in the production of biofertilizers and recovery of added-value compounds: nutrient recycling, soil improvement and recovery of Critical Raw Materials in order to obtain added value compounds, biopolymers, bio-fertilizers, energy, etc. 

It also has a great deal of experience in water and wastewater treatments, wastewater resource recovery and reuse (AOPs such as Photocatalysis, Electrochemical and Membrane Technologies as Forward and Reverse Osmosis, Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and UV-LEDs Disinfection Systems), Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and economic impact assessments (LCC) of products and whole process (cradle to gate).


The Solar Energy Research Center (CIESOL) is a joint research centre between the Plataforma Solar de Almería and the University of Almería, located at the campus of the university. CIESOL engages in research and technology transfer activities in the field of solar energy applications concerning organometallics and photochemistry, water treatment, environmental analysis, photosynthesis and desalination, modelling and automatic control of solar systems, home automation for energy efficiency, as well as solar cooling and solar resources assessment.

Water Treatment and Environmental Analysis. 

Three water analysis laboratories equipped with several analytical devices very convenient for the developed research line, which are ready and available to work on wastewater treatment, such as Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array Detector (UPLC-DAD), Ionic Chromatography (IC) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyzer provided with automatic injectors; spectrophotometer, devices for BOD5, COD and respirometry analysis. 

Advanced analytical equipment comprises a liquid chromatography-quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry (LC-QqLIT-MS) system (Sciex QTRAP 5500) for quantitative determination of low-level organic microcontaminants, a liquid chromatography hybrid triple quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (LC-QqTOF-MS/MS) system (TripleTOF 5600+), useful for non-target identification of metabolites and transformation products and a gas chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-QqQ-MS/MS) system for less polar and volatile compounds determination. The lab also has an automated solid phase extraction system and a nitrogen evaporator. Solar pilot plants for photocatalytic removal of toxic substances and water disinfection like solar tubular reactors with compound parabolic collectors (CPCs), raceway pond reactors (RPRs) and membrane biological reactors (MBRs) are available at CIESOL, all of them with instrumentation control systems.


Research Center specialized in energy efficiency and sustainability, performing technological development in 4 main areas: Bioenergy, Mobility and Infrastructures, Industry and Sustainable Buildings.  Based on its large R&D activity in the field of biomethane use in vehicles and its expertise in Life Cycle Management, EnergyLab will evaluate the quality of obtained biomethane as fuel for the automotive sector and the environmental performance of the whole project through Life Cycle Assessment.
